2017 Barbacan ‘Sol’ Valtellina Superiore Valgella
Barbacan is a family of Alpine farmers who are wholly dedicated to cultivating their native autochthonous grapes, primarily Chiavennasca (aka Nebbiolo) with also other less known vines of Róssola, Rossolino Rosa, Brugnòla, Negrera from 7 hectares of steep ancient terraced vineyards. The Sega family’s farm is located in San Giacomo di Teglio which is in the heart of the Valtellina Valley and produces around 20 000 bottles of truly handmade wine. Valtellina is recognised as one of the last bastions of what the Italian’s like to call ‘heroic’ viticulture. The steepness of the vineyards and altitude are about as hard as any vines in the world to cultivate and the dedication and passion it takes to work the back breaking slopes is admirable.
Brothers Luca & Matteo not only have a gift for coaxing out the incredible Alpine character from their vines but have a very sure hand in the cellar as well. As with the vineyard work, the cellar follows a natural path with sulphur dioxide being the only addition in the winemaking process.
