2023 Calvez-Bobinet Poil de Lievre Chenin

Spectacular Chenin Blanc from Saumur-Champigny in Loire Valley, France. If you've not tried Chenin Blanc before, THIS is the wine to start with. Chenin is a bit like Riesling in the sense that they're both high acid varieties, that can show amazing minerality and  can be both very dry, very sweet and everything in between.

This Chenin has a delicate power, it is fresh and taught - there's a real precision here. Apple blossom, fresh quince, lemon and a minerality to this wine gives it a real pep-in-its-step. They've matured this wine in some old french barrels and left it on gross lees for a time - this gives it fleshy texture that balances that bright zippiness and blurs those acid edges just a touch. 

'Bobinet has now added his wife's name - to this domain, Calvez-Bobinet - which is great, as Eméline has played a rather large role in the conversion of their vineyards to organics. Sebastien Bobinet is a 7th generation winemaker, who started this domaine in 2002. These expert hands wield excellent wines, and as an absolute Loire tragic, (don't ask me to tell you about that one time I went to Angers wine fair. I'll never shut up about it) it's a total delight to bring you some stonkingly good wines. Saumur Champigny sits on a large shelf of chalk - we don't often talk about soil here, but I do think this is important, as this aids water retention in the warmer months, reflect light in the cooler and adds a chalky minerality to the wines that I do think you can really see here.
